Pausing to Reflect: A Vision Boarding Journey into 2025
On a crisp January afternoon, twelve individuals came together at the James M. Duncan Library in Alexandria to embark on a journey of introspection and intention-setting for the year ahead. The room hummed with quiet anticipation as participants gathered supplies—magazines, scissors, and glue—ready to translate their inner desires into vibrant visual expressions of the futures they wished to cultivate.
The workshop was more than an artistic exercise; it was a sacred space to pause, reflect, and plant the seeds for a purposeful year. Through guided activities, thoughtful discussion, and shared wisdom, participants began to shift their mindsets from chasing rigid resolutions to embracing fluid, heart-centered intentions.
Resolutions vs. Intentions: Embracing a Holistic Approach
A defining moment of the afternoon came with the exploration of resolutions versus intentions. Resolutions, often rooted in external pressures and outcome-driven expectations, can leave little room for self-compassion. They tend to focus on what needs to be “fixed,” like pledging to hit the gym daily or save a specific amount of money.
Intentions, by contrast, are about alignment—with one’s values, emotions, and personal rhythms. An intention might look like, “I choose to nurture my well-being through movement that feels joyful” or “I will cultivate financial habits that honor my goals and values.” By inviting flexibility and mindfulness, intentions become a sustainable way to connect with the essence of who we are and how we want to show up in the world.
Exploring Tools for Intention Setting
To help participants dive deep, the workshop introduced three powerful tools, each offering unique insights into the present moment and the path ahead:
1. The Wheel of Life
This classic self-assessment tool offered participants a chance to reflect on key areas of their lives—relationships, career, health, spirituality, and more. By visualizing their satisfaction in each area, they could identify where energy was flowing freely and where it felt stagnant. The exercise encouraged curiosity, not judgment, and provided a roadmap for greater balance.
2. The Wheel of the Year
Drawing from Celtic and pagan traditions, the Wheel of the Year celebrates nature’s cyclical rhythm through solstices, equinoxes, and cross-quarter festivals. Participants were encouraged to align their intentions with the seasonal shifts—honoring the energy of growth in spring, abundance in summer, reflection in autumn, and rest in winter. This perspective reminded everyone of the wisdom in nature’s cycles and the importance of pacing oneself throughout the year.
3. The Chakra System
Turning inward, participants explored the chakra system, a map of the body’s energy centers. They reflected on which areas felt balanced and which needed nurturing. Whether it was grounding at the root, opening the heart, or tapping into creative flow through the sacral chakra, this exercise brought awareness to the connection between their physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
Integrating External and Internal Wisdom
One of the workshop’s most profound realizations was the harmony between external and internal guidance. By weaving together the seasonal wisdom of the Wheel of the Year with the energy flow of the chakras, participants created intentions that were both grounded and expansive. This alignment ensured their vision boards weren’t just aspirational—they were deeply personal, rooted in balance and flow.
Looking Ahead to 2025
As scissors snipped and magazines were transformed into collages of hope and clarity, the room felt alive with possibility. Each vision board was a reflection of its creator: a blend of vibrant images, affirmations, and symbols, speaking to dreams, desires, and the deep yearning for purpose.
If you missed this session, don’t worry—another workshop is coming in February! It’s another opportunity to reflect, connect, and channel your energy into creating a vision for the year.
Let’s step into 2025 with mindful intentions, deep alignment, and hearts full of possibility. Whether you’re new to vision boarding or returning to it as a trusted practice, this is your chance to pause, dream, and create a future rooted in clarity and purpose.
